TSA's Health & Wellness Conference 2024 (Cost $120)

Join us for an exciting in-person event at the Fairview Community Health and Wellness Hub in Saint Paul, MN, USA. This workshop is geared for professionals working in various capacities with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind and/or Hearing people of all ages in the areas of Psychology and Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, Spirituality, Lifespan Services, Vocational Rehabilitation, Interpreting/Communication, Trauma, Domestic Violence, Advocacy, Education, Technology and Healthcare. Presenter:

Jaime A.B. Wilson, Ph.D., ABN, ABPP, Postdoctoral M.S. in Clinical Psychopharmacology

Dr. Wilson is a prescribing medical psychologist and board-certified neuropsychologist in full-time private practice inside and outside Washington State. He holds privileges at several area hospitals and has worked extensively with physicians, other healthcare providers, and forensic experts, providing neuropsychological evaluations across the U.S. The field of neuropsychology is dedicated to learning about and diagnosing conditions related to the brain and nervous system.

As a Past President of the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses, Dr. Wilson also serves on the Diversity Council for the Society of Prescribing Psychology and as Chair of the Diversity Committee for the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology.

Dr. Wilson has also published a book on the what, how, and why of dementia and the hearing loss tie-in. In Preserving the Etchings of the Mind, Dr. Wilson discusses how we can protect ourselves against the disease of dementia while maximizing the quality of our lives during the Golden Years. Born with a profound hearing loss, Dr. Wilson grew up wearing bilateral hearing aids and primarily communicated using spoken language, although he is also an American Sign Language user. Dr. Wilson resides in Olympia, WA, with his wife (a registered nurse who is also deaf), three kids, and a King Charles Spaniel named Pepper Jack.

Part I: Unraveling the Deaf-Dementia Connection: New Insights and Strategies (This is Part 2 of Dr. Wilson's presentation from December, 2023)

Abstract / Workshop Description:

Dive into the compelling world of dementia research with an all-new and updated focus on its impact on the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Recent studies have shed light on the alarming rise in dementia diagnoses among the Deaf and hard of hearing, presenting a critical call for deeper understanding and action.

This dynamic workshop, led by renowned expert Dr. Wilson, builds on the foundational knowledge of dementia's prevalence in the Deaf community, exploring the nuanced links between hearing loss etiology and a 24% increased risk of developing dementia. We will dissect the intricacies of different dementia types, their progression, and the vital risk factors at play.
Join us for an enlightening session that not only deepens your understanding but also empowers you with practical tools to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by dementia. Whether you are a healthcare professional, a caregiver, or someone passionate about this critical subject, this workshop promises to equip you with essential knowledge, preventive tactics, and a fresh perspective on dealing with dementia in the Deaf community.

Learning Objectives / Goals:

A) Name dementia prevalence statistics among our D/HH population.
B) Recognize the connection between dementia and hearing loss, as well as new and more in-depth details on the how, what, and why.

C) Indicate the “Big Seven" risk factors.
D) Know how to get treatment and implement other protective factors.


Part II: The Chameleon Effect: Medical Conditions that Look Like Psychiatric Illnesses

Abstract / Workshop Description:

This dynamic workshop offers an essential exploration of working with Deaf, hard of hearing, and DeafBlind (DHHDB) patients. Participants will learn key strategies in cultural and linguistic competency, understand the risks of misdiagnosis, and discover effective interventions for complex medical conditions that can mask as a psychiatric condition. Dive into the intersection of health and behavior in the DHHDB community, enhancing your capacity for impactful and accurate care.

Learning Objectives / Goals:

A) Recognize at least five findings in a DHHDB psychiatric patient that may suggest an underlying medical condition.

B) Describe at least three general medical conditions that commonly manifest with psychiatric presentations, including some that are specific to DHHDB individuals.
C) Identify common medications that may contribute to psychiatric side effects.
D) Articulate problem-solving strategies for appropriate diagnoses and treatment of medical and psychiatric conditions presenting in DHHDB individuals.

Computer Assisted Real-time Captioning (CART), an FM amplification system, and voice interpretation, as the presenter is Deaf and will sign for himself using American Sign Language, will be provided. Please request any additional accommodations or special interpretation needs (deaf-blind, low-vision) before April 5th, 2024, in order to give us ample time to find interpreter teams.
