From the Jazz Age to the Great Depression, through college dances and the rise of television in the 1950s, student protests and the evolution of graduate programs in the 1990s, New Haven’s Albertus Magnus College has seen a world of changes over the last 100 years. The New Haven Museum (NHM) will celebrate the centennial of Albertus Magnus College with a lecture series entitled, “Celebrating a Century.” The initial presentation, “Truth, Tradition, Transformation: Celebrating a Century of Albertus Magnus College” by Albertus Magnus College Community Services Librarian and College Archivist Catie White, will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 6 p.m., preceded by a reception at 5:30 p.m.

With a decade of experience in the library and museum field, White offers a passion for research and uncovering stories from the past that may not have been previously told. She will base her first New Haven Museum presentation on her book, “Albertus Magnus College: Fearless Endless Truth – One Hundred Years of Education, Faith, and Tradition – 1925-2025,” a new and updated history of Albertus Magnus College to mark the centennial.
During her lecture, White will highlight the history of Albertus Magnus College, sharing stories from across the decades that show how New England’s first Catholic, residential, liberal-arts college for women has grown from a student body of 50 to almost 1,300.
“Albertus has witnessed world events and adapted to meet the needs of its students for a century,” White adds. She notes the college went co-ed in 1985 (despite student protests) and faculty and staff have been happily serving both men and women across all disciplines for 40 years.
“My hope in giving this first presentation is that the public will learn something new about Albertus Magnus College,” says White. “It is a hidden gem that is worth celebrating, exploring, and pursuing from a historical as well as a modern perspective.”
The “Celebrating a Century” series will continue in 2026 with a virtual lecture, “A Multicultural History of Albertus Magnus College” on February 4, 2026, and “Fearless Females of Albertus Magnus College” on March 18, 2026. A “What’s in the Whitney Library” program, “The Evolution of Girls Education,” on April 11, 2026, will highlight the topic using documents, books, and archives from the Whitney Library.
