About this Event
What can the fight for democracy and truth-telling in Russia teach us about navigating today’s new political realities? How have Russian journalists exposed the workings of a powerful authoritarian regime, even from exile? And what do the long-standing relationship between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin and their ideologies reveal about the challenges facing democracy?
Join us for a compelling conversation with Stanford professor Michael McFaul, investigative journalist Roman Anin, and moderator Dawn Garcia, director of the John S. Knight Journalism Fellowships at Stanford, as they explore these pressing questions. The discussion will examine the relationship between Trump and Putin and the critical role of independent Russian journalism in exposing the wrongdoings of the authoritarian regime.
Roman Anin, founder of the investigative platform iStories and a former JSK Fellow at Stanford, will share firsthand accounts of the extraordinary risks and methods used by Russian journalists to investigate Putin’s regime and combat disinformation and propaganda.
Professor Michael McFaul, former U.S. ambassador to Russia, director of the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, and Ken Olivier and Angela Nomellini Professor of International Studies at Stanford, will offer thoughts into how these dynamics shape the global political landscape and what they could mean for the new Trump administration in 2025.
