Truetone Honeys’ Album Release Party at Gallery 5: A celebration of century-old jazz vocal harmony
The evening of November 23rd will mark the album release of the Hampton Roads-based jazz group the Truetone Honeys with assistance from Au Fromage.
Their arrangements might be antique, with a focus on the 1920s and 30s repertoire, but they are never stuffy. The Honeys like to say that they perform these arrangements "not because they're old, but because they're good". The band is obsessed with the harmonic stylings of original New Orleans jazz vocal groups, especially the Boswell Sisters, and groups that followed in that vein--such as the midwestern Dinning Sisters and, yes, even the more famous Andrews Sisters. The band is especially proud of the nuance and authenticity with which they perform this music. They feel that these tunes, if heard at all, are often performed with vocal technique that does not make sense for the focus of the pieces. "You have to really spend time with this music, understand what's wonderful about it, and highlight those particular wonders in every aspect of the way you perform. And we've done that work for six years," says Corey.
The band is delighted to showcase all that they've learned in their journey so far with their new album, and the release party at Richmond's Gallery 5 to celebrate! The album highlights jewels of the genre, including familiar standards such as "The Way You Look Tonight" tonight and "Loch Lomond", along with your new favorite 30s breakup song, "Was That the Human Thing to Do?". The Honeys' highest hope is that this album, and the soulful environment of their shows, will reignite an appreciation for these older jewels of vocal jazz, and the women who crafted them.
Are you a swing dancer, vintage lover, or music aficionado looking for something so-old-it's-new-again? This album--and its release party--is for you!
