In Beethoven’s challenging life, he battled with deafness, depression, and many illnesses. Two important retreats shaped his life. After his 1802 retreat to Heiligenstadt, where he contemplated suicide, Beethoven emerged more determined than ever, and premiered his second symphony and third piano concerto. His 1812 escape to Bohemia allowed him to, again, regain his strength, and this time, returned triumphantly with his seventh and eighth symphonies, premiered under a suitable mood of victory over Napoleon.
