About this Event
Triptides is shedding the word "psychedelic" from its vocabulary. After over a decade of adventurous songs and albums across genres and styles—ranging from bedroom pop to prog rock to Laurel Canyon country—the term "interdimensional" feels more appropriate to the Southern California-based band.
Driven by the songwriting of multi-instrumentalist Glenn Brigman, with longtime collaborator and multi-instrumentalist Stephen Burns, Triptides is moving through a galaxy of music, following only their own compass. With their latest album, Starlight (Curation Records), the duo proves there is a lot more they wish to explore. In an almost-jazzy fusion of electric keyboard textures and dance floor grooves, the 11-song LP dips and dives into the worlds of Stereolab, Steely Dan, and Cortex.
It’s quite a departure from last year’s laid-back acoustic strummer, So Many Days, and it’s lightyears from the surf-rock-cassette era of the group. Starting in 2010 in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, Brigman was making albums as Triptides with roommates and friends in a raw, Beach Boys-meet-Cleaners-From-Venus cassette-induced haze. Their albums Psychic Summer, Sun Pavilion, and Colors made a mark and paved the way for greater things.
As the band moved west, so did their influences, and Los Angeles brought out a more sophisticated element in Triptides. Doors-inspired organ flourishes and driving, Stereolab-esque movements melded with the spirit of the 5D-era Byrds to bring a potent melodic punch in the form of 2017’s Afterglow and 2018’s Visitors.
Alter Echoes (Alive Naturalsound Records) was recorded at Hollywood’s Boulevard Studios, a room that has experienced sessions from the Standells' Dirty Water, Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and Steely Dan’s Aja. They reveal themselves as well-traveled adventurers, pushing the definition of psychedelic. On stage and in the studio, Triptides has opened up a new sonic world. Their live shows across the U.S. and Europe are bold, dynamic yet synchronized, and just a little chaotic.
“L.A. indie trio Triptides tap into a heartwarming sense of being on their latest song ‘So Many Days,’ offered with subtly heard guitar wails and jangly rhythms.” – Rolling Stone
“Among the newest generation of bands in the tradition of West Coast psychedelia, Triptides have blossomed into the role of elegant adventurers.” – Glide Magazine
“You can get a clue as to where this Southern California–based trio is coming from in the first four letters of its name. Imagine a cross between early Pink Floyd ballads like ‘If’ and ‘Fat Old Sun’ and the Laurel Canyon sound from the same era, and you won’t be far off.” – The Aquarian
