In 1991, at the urging of Jimmy LaFave and Butch Hancock, I hosted my first Tribute To Woody Guthrie in Austin at the Cactus Cafe. Back then we sang about fascists just like Woody wrote, but it was not a real direct threat yet. Fascism was Hitler and Mussolini, we just used the word as a metaphor for the bad guys.
