From Magna Carta to Virginia Water: A Scenic and Historical Hike in Surrey
If you are looking for a scenic and historical hike, you might want to try this route that takes you from Egham to Virginia Water, passing through Runnymede, Windsor Great Park, The Savill Garden and The Valley Gardens. You will start in Egham, where you can visit the Magna Carta Monument, a tribute to the famous charter of rights that was sealed here in 1215. From there, you will walk across Runnymede, a nature reserve that is home to many birds, butterflies and wildflowers. You will then head to Snow Hill, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Windsor Castle and the surrounding countryside. Next, you will enter The Savill Garden, a 35-acre haven of gardens, woodland and seasonal displays that was commissioned by George V and created by Eric Savill in 1932. You will explore the different areas of the garden, such as the Rose Garden, the Spring Wood and the Hidden Gardens. You will then continue to The Valley Gardens, where you will find a variety of plants from around the world, such as azaleas, magnolias and rhododendrons. You will also see the Obelisk Pond, the Punch Bowl and the Totem Pole. Finally, you will reach Virginia Water Lake, a large artificial lake that was created in the 18th century. You will walk along the shore of the lake, admiring the views and the attractions, such as the Cascade, the Roman Ruins and the Canadian Totem Pole. You will then finish your hike in Virginia Water Town, where you can relax and enjoy a well-deserved meal or drink.
