There is much to explore in Chastain Park, including the lost Witches Cave. Less than 100 years ago, sheltered by ancient trees and giant boulders, this site hosts an array of curiosities. This urban oasis provides a diverse array of tree species that create a rainbow like canopy in the fall, and also holds keys to Atlanta’s past with secrets written along the century old stonework. Chastain Park today is known as a North Atlanta gem with over 260 acres of jogging paths, playgrounds, tennis courts, a golf course, a public swimming pool, horse park, amphitheater, and more. The history of Chastain Park is long and winding, from hosting public alms houses, a grim convict camp, and being a catalyst of desegregation in the city to now being a community cornerstone of North Atlanta.
About the Docents: Kent and Maxine Watkins are residents of Sandy Springs who enjoy hiking, biking and exploring new parks during their free time. They are experienced tour leaders supporting Trees Atlanta's mission by planting, pruning and sharing their love of trees with others.
