Join ecologist Matt Collis to uncover the secrets of tree identification in-person on a guided winter walk
About this Event

Improve your connection to the unique British landscape by getting to know our treasured trees, on this one day in-person raining course. Through a combination of theory and practical exercises, professional ecologist Matt Collis, will teach you how to identify 30 common trees and contextualise them within the local landscape, ecology and wildlife. The course will also include a fantastic guided walk.

This popular course has taught our past attendees how to view and appreciate trees in a deeper way. It has also encouraged them to put more time aside to learn about the fascinating nature they encounter every day. Join your fellow nature enthusiasts on this course to experience it for yourself. 


Learning outcomes:

  • Learn how to identify approx. 30 of the most common UK species with an emphasis on native and naturalized species
  • Develop & practice your identification skills through interactive exercises under expert supervision
  • Discover about the life and ecology of UK trees
  • Discuss the role and merits of trees and tree planting to future conservation efforts

About your tutor, Matt Collis:

Matt is a professional ecologist and uses these skills as a teacher, consultant & wildlife tour leader based in Devon. Passionate about sharing his love for nature and connecting others, Matt is a tutor for the British Trust for Ornithology and Avon Wildlife Trust. Covering a broad range of taxa, he has both a wide and specialist knowledge of all things British wildlife and beyond. When he's not teaching, he continues to connect people to nature through Devon Wildlife Tours, his bespoke wildlife tour company.
