About this Event
Come give rock climbing a try at Nelson Rocks during Treasure Maintain Festival and take Pendleton County to new heights! No prior climbing experience or gear necessary.
This beginner-friendly event will give Treasure Mountain Festival attendees an opportunity to try rock climbing on both an introductory artificial wall, as well as on natural rock routes at Nelson Rocks that offer challenges ranging from beginner to intermediate difficulty.
What to expect?
After checking in at the American Alpine Club booth located next to Nelson Rocks Visitor Center, we will fit you with a helmet, harness, and climbing shoes (if necessary). Afterwards, walk over the artificial climbing wall where you will meet your belayer. Your belayer will verify that your climbing gear is safely adjusted, go over a few basic climbing commands, and tie you into the climbing rope. Ready to climb? Lets climb!
We will also be offering an opportunity for participants to climb the natural walls on Nelson Rocks. About once an hour, a shuttle will depart from the check-in desk and take you up to the rocks where you will find belayers ready to help and keep you safe as you attempt to climb the taller routes that Nelson Rocks offers.
All climbing will be belayed top rope climbing, to keep you from falling, help you lower off the climb, and help ensure your safety. There will be a rope attached to a strong anchor at the top of the climb, and as a climber you will tie into one end of the rope while your belayer holds the other end of the rope in a specialized belay device. As you climb, your belayer will pull in the other end of the rope, so that you are tightly held onto the wall. Should you fall, the rope, and your belayer will catch you, and when you're finished climbing your belayer will lower you slowly to the ground.
