Learn direct from farmers with agritourism ventures about their successes and challenges on UMES Extension's Traveling Agritourism Workshop.
The bus will depart from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 8 a.m. and return at approximately 5 p.m. Please plan to check in no later than 7:30 a.m.
The tour will visit agritourism locations in Worcester and Somerset counties. Lunch is included.
The cost is $50 per person and pre-registration is required; no walk-ups will be accepted. Pre-registration ends Sept. 15. Space is limited.
The bus will depart from the Richard A. Henson Center parking lot at 30690 University Blvd S., Princess Anne, MD 21853. [See parking and transportation instructions below]
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Select stops include:
- BayBees Honey, an apiary in Whaleyville.
- Sugar Water Manor, a farm bed-and-breakfast in Westover.
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:
- Role in Maryland agritourism
- Business aspects of the operations including value addition, branding and marketing
- Handling/managing visitors
- Liability, taxes, zoning and permitting
- Challenges (weather and seasonality, liability, taxes, labor force) and lessons learned
- Hands-on demonstration and sample testing
PARKING AND TRANSPORTATION:
All vehicles parked on campus must be registered with campus police. For a visitor pass, go to: https://wwwcp.umes.edu/auxiliary/new-parking-system-faqs/. On the Parking Portal click "Contractor/Temporary Permit Request."
Park in Lot A, near the Ella Fitzgerald Performing Arts Center. Then make your way to the Richard A. Henson Center for breakfast and check-in (7:30 a.m.).
All participants must ride the bus for the entirety of the tour without advanced written permission from the organizer.
