Trapped: Uncanny Thrillers

Curiouser and curiouser, darker and darker. These animated films take you down the rabbit hole to lands beyond your wildest dreams – and nightmares. Something evil lurks in the garden, monsters swarm your childhood room, a camera makes everyone into cucumbers. For twisty animations that shift your perception of what a cartoon can be, look no further.

THE FILMS

Fury (Furia)

Julia Siuda | 2021 | Poland | 5

Growing anger, frustration, and aggression seek an outlet. While losing herself in her emotions, the heroine cannot stand the tension.

Lucky Strike

Benjamin Ades | 2021 | US | 17

Lucky Strike shares its runtime between an epistolary-like account of a former relationship, told through the various locations in which it took place in New York City, and tangent meditations on love, loneliness, memory and film. Meticulous in every aspect of its conception and strict visual language, it is a stream of consciousness, slow and meditative essayistic film.

Man or Tree

Varun Raman & Tom Hancock | 2021 | UK | 4

In the wilderness, a tree begins to question whether it may actually be a man tripping on hallucinogens given to him by an idiotic friend.

Puss

Leah Shore | 2020 | US | 8

Samantha really wants to get laid, but is having a hard time for some reason.

Stuffed

Theo Rhys | 2021 | UK | 19

Stuffed is a short musical about a taxidermist who dreams of stuffing a human and the man she meets online, so afraid of aging he volunteers to be her specimen. An unexpected romantic spark between them complicates their plans.

Two-Spirit

Mónica Taboada-Tapia | 2021 | Colombia | 16

For Georgina, an indigenous transgender woman, life in the desert is lonely and cruel. In her small village, no one understands who she is.

You've Never Been Completely Honest

Joey Izzo | 2021 | US | 11

A hybrid-documentary, using animation and reenactment footage, brings to life Gene Church's never before heard audio interview, recounting the harrowing physical torture and brainwashing at a secretive 4-day leadership seminar in 1970s California.
