If you have never attended this camp, you may ask, “What is Transracial Journeys Family Camp?” Camp is a unique place for learning and discussing the intersecting issues of adoption, race, class and culture, and identity for the whole family. Camp is a place for fun - arts & crafts, playing games, swimming, talent show, campfire, catching up with old friends, making new friends, walks outside, long heartfelt chats, and much more.Camp is for the whole family - transracially adopted children, biological siblings, and adoptive parents. Camp is a place for parents and children to be in community with other families that mirror each other and counselors who have lived experiences with transracial adoption.
Camp is structured to include learning time, family time, and community time. In the morning and early afternoon, children participate in age-appropriate activities focused on exploration and learning. These activities include storytelling, games, reading, writing, journaling, mindful movement, brain breaks, art, basketball, hip-hop, tumbling/floor gymnastics, yoga, and many other exciting options. Parents participate in sessions with speakers to dive deep into the core issues of adoption, race, class, and culture to elevate parents’ skill levels to actively address these issues.
In the afternoon, families will come together for parent-guided and supervised activities such as rock climbing, swimming, hair styling, holiday parties, dance parties, Olympic games, card making, bike riding, talent shows, or movie watching. Additionally, you can join us for a tour of the Ohio University campus, where you'll learn about its history, discover interesting facts, and explore various facilities, including athletics, fine arts, and residence halls.
