As adoption social work professionals, your role is pivotal in facilitating healthy and supportive environments for adoptive families, particularly those navigating the complexities of transracial or interracial adoption. This all-day interactive workshop aims to empower you with the tools and insights necessary to effectively guide and support adoptive parents through the journey of understanding race and racism in the context of transracial/interracial adoptee experiences.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Understanding the Historical Context: Gain comprehensive knowledge about the history of transracial adoption in the United States, exploring its evolution and significance. Understand why this historical context is critical for adoptive parents to comprehend in order to provide culturally sensitive parenting.
- Facilitating Race Conversations: Learn strategies for initiating and sustaining open dialogues about race with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) adoptees of any age. Explore effective communication techniques tailored to the unique dynamics of adoptive families.
- Navigating External Influences: Develop skills to assist adoptive parents in engaging with extended family members and the wider community on issues related to race and racism. Learn how to support adoptive parents to understand the importance of creating a supportive network that fosters cultural understanding and acceptance.
- Empowering Children: Explore methods for teaching adoptive parents to recognize, understand, and navigate race and racism beyond the confines of their home environment. Learn age-appropriate approaches to instill confidence and resilience in adoptees facing racial challenges.
