Sponsors: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Center for Japanese StudiesThis symposium brings together scholars based in Japan and the United States to discuss the past, present, and future of scholarly and community-based work to preserve and translate Japanese-language literature written during the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans. The panelists will discuss earlier histories of efforts by researchers based in Japan and the United States to preserve and reprint literary journals produced in incarceration camps. Conversation will also turn to current efforts to translate literary journals published at the Tule Lake Segregation Center, including Tessaku [鉄柵, or Iron Fence ].
