About this Event

In connection with Oxford Theatre Guild’s performances of Racine’s Andromache in an English verse translation, Oxford experts in ancient drama and classical French literature join the translator and director of the play to discuss this rarely-seen European masterpiece, from the page to the stage.

Speakers: Professor Fiona MacIntosh (St Hilda’s College, Oxford) is Professor of Classical Reception and Director of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama; Professor Katherine Ibbett (Trinity College, Oxford) is Professor of French and a specialist in 16th and 17th century French literature and culture; James McDougall, (Trinity College, Oxford), is directing Andromache for OTG and by day is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, working on contemporary France and the Middle East; David Bryer (University of Sussex), has worked at the Royal Court, the National Theatre and the RSC. He was commissioned by Cheek by Jowl theatre company in 1984 to translate Racine’s Andromaque for their English-language premiere of the play. His new revision of that translation is now being staged in Oxford.

Performances of Andromache will run 20th-25th September 2021, for further information and to book tickets here.
