Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of the transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. Vigils are hosted each year by the trans community, pride organizations, and trans advocates where the names of those lost to violence are read out loud, and attendees learn about the violence that trans people face. It’s a day that also raises public awareness of the hate crimes against trans people.
Essex Pride is giving our trans community and active allies and advocates a chance to share sacred space in a candlelight vigil, memorializing those who have died this year due to anti-trans violence. We will honor those we’ve lost and affirm our trans community as valuable.
After brief remarks and a reading of the names of our trans siblings we’ve lost, we’ll provide an opportunity for our trans and nonbinary community members to share any poetry or spoken word readings and tell your stories.
We’ll start promptly at 6pm inside of Uncommon Coffee / Offbeat Creemee.
The vigil is for folks of all ages, and attendees will each be provided with an LED candle to hold during the vigil.
