About this Event
Join us for a Jazz Concert, Saturday, November 4th, 2023 at 7pm at 2110 Chestnut Street, in the sanctuary of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion!
Transformation Genesis, our first jazz and small groups concert in years, will be hosted by Balena Canto and directed by Jazz Director Esau Jones. It will feature the PFB Big Band Jazz Ensemble, an all-volunteer community band. $10 suggested donation, no one turned away for lack of funds.
Balena Canto (she/her) is Philadelphia's seductive song-wielding siren with a voice snatched for the gods! Born on the southern coast of Italia, Balena Canto sang out to sea conjuring a passing humpback whale who took her to a distant and mysterious land called “Philadelphia.” Balena's favorite thing about her home is a local delicacy called, "water ice" (helps soothe the singer's throat). Balena’s mission in life is to bring joy, laughter, and perhaps a tear or two (she is an opera singer after all) to her audiences through song. She firmly believes in the transformative and healing power of music and the performing arts. She also LOVES making people laugh and has a special talent for writing/performing original song parodies!
Esau Jones is a quintessentially trained educator, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Covington and New Orleans, LA. He holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from Loyola University New Orleans with a double major in Music Education and Composition, and is currently pursuing a Hybrid Masters in Music and Music Education from Columbia University. Additionally, Jones serves as a PreK-8th general music, orchestra, and choir teacher in the West Philadelphia area. Heavily influenced by his personal experiences, Jones centers music on experiencing life through and with others. He hopes to create safer, healthier, and enjoyable environments through collaboration and incorporation of shared experiences by way of music making.
The Philadelphia Freedom Band (PFB) is a non-profit organization comprised of a wide variety of talented musicians, ranging from amateur to professional. We come together to perform throughout the greater Philadelphia area and provide visible, active support to the LGBTQ+ community. We welcome anyone who is committed to our shared goal of musical excellence and our commitment to social justice. Members participate through our ensembles, including concert band, marching band, and jazz ensemble.
