Further event details:
TransForm: the possibilities and politics of our trans bodies is a group exhibition of new and existing works by trans and gender diverse artists living in, or with strong ties to, Garramilla/Darwin. Bringing together work across multiple artistic mediums, the exhibition creates a space by and for trans people to investigate, celebrate, and reflect on who and how we are today, tomorrow, and beyond.
Our bodies are sites of creativity, resilience, and intimacy, as well as being made subject to shifting public debates and structural barriers. The political landscape for trans people is fraught, shifting, and complex. This exhibition asks artists and audiences to consider how trans existence, joy, and resistance are shaped by climates of fear and intolerance, while also imagining new ways of living, thriving, and making community.
As writer and artist Maia Kobabe reflects: “…think of gender less as a scale and more as a landscape. Some people are born in the mountains, while others are born by the sea. Some people are happy to live in the place they were born, while others must make a journey to reach the climate in which they can flourish and grow. Between the ocean and the mountains is a wild forest. That is where I want to make my home.”
In this spirit, TransForm offers a landscape for artists and audiences alike to encounter the multiplicity of trans experience – possibilities, politics, and ongoing transformations. All trans and gender diverse community members are invited to exhibit in the exhibition.
