Mind training: some short texts from the Lojong Gyatsa
We are pleased to announce this day of meditation and study led by Paul Rogers, who has been a student of Lama Jampa for several decades and coordinates the Exeter Buddhist group (Sakya Thinley Namgyal Ling).
The study day is open to all. It is ideal for those who have been attending the classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Sakya Buddhist Centre, and for anyone interested in learning more about the Buddhist path.
Lojong is a very well-founded Mahayana tradition of spiritual practice. It presents the teachings as something we can apply directly to our experience, without extensive scholarly knowledge or acquaintance with many systems of practice. In fact it takes the bull by the horns, insofar as it deals with the difficulties and obstacles on the path such as the disturbing emotions. These negativities then become the raw material to be transformed into the qualities of enlightened mind – compassion and wisdom.
The specific texts we will be looking at are brief, even by the standards of lojong, and they are not comprehensive presentations like “The Seven Points of Mind Training”. Pithy, concise and focused, their instructions we first encounter in a textual context, then in meditation sessions, and subsequently aim to integrate them into everyday life.
There will be a brief overview of mind training at the beginning of the sessions. After going through the texts we’ll practise the meditation topics as suggested by Lama Jampa Thaye.
The day will be divided into four one hour sessions: 10.30-11.30, 12.00-13.00, 2.00-3.00, 3.30-4.30. Please arrive by 10.15am for a 10.30am start.
Refreshments will be provided but please bring some lunch (to share if you wish).
Facility Fee: £15 per day or £5 per session
