Trafford Council Public Health are offering Trafford Council staff aged 30 to 74 years the opportunity to have a free NHS Health Check at Trafford Town Hall or Sale Waterside during working hours.
This offer is part of a national Workplace Cardiovascular Disease Health Check running until 31st March 2025. The pilot scheme delivers cardiovascular disease checks for employees in workplace settings to help people stay healthy and in work.
What is an NHS Health Check?
An NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health which helps to detect and prevent cardiovascular disease, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, and stroke, as well as dementia in individuals aged over 65. Cardiovascular disease is one of the biggest causes of death and disability in England but 80% of cases are preventable.
Even though you might be feeling great, if you’re over thirty you may be at risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Many of the warning signs for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, do not have symptoms.
An NHS Health Check is quick and easy way to detect these symptoms and risk factors early and should take no longer than 20 to 30 minutes. The check will be carried out by a healthcare professional, who will take your medical and family history, simple measurements such as your height, weight and blood pressure, a blood test to check your cholesterol levels, and a short lifestyle questionnaire. You may also have a test to check your blood sugar levels if your body mass index (height and weight) and blood pressure are high, or dementia if you're over 65.
Using this information, the healthcare professional will calculate your risk of developing cardiovascular disease over the next 10 years. They will then discuss your results and how you can reduce your risk and stay healthy. You might be referred to your GP or local services for further support following your health check.
