The Netarts area, part of the ancestral lands and waters of the Tillamook people, has sustained Indigenous communities for countless generations. Join Netarts Bay WEBS and the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum in welcoming Stephanie Craig, a tradition keeper, educator, and founder of Kalapuya Weaving and Consulting and Rooted Ways: An Indigenous Cultural & Ecological Initiative.
In this enriching presentation, Stephanie will share stories, teachings, and ancestral knowledge rooted in the lifeways of the Tillamook people and the ecosystems of the Oregon Coast.
The talk will explore the deep relationships between land, culture, and community resilience. Topics include traditional seasonal lifeways, Indigenous food and medicine gathering, the role of women in cultural practice, and the lasting impacts of colonization on coastal Tribal communities.
Stephanie will also introduce Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) as a living system of care, reciprocity, and long-term environmental stewardship. Through examples from coastal habitats, including tidal foodways, prairie and wetland tending, and fire ecology. Attendees will gain insight into how story, ceremony, and hands-on practice carry ecological knowledge forward.
The session will highlight important cultural plants such as cedar, camas, and elderberry, along with traditional basketry forms and techniques. Stephanie will discuss how weaving serves as both a cultural and ecological act of restoration, and share her ongoing work through Rooted Ways, a community initiative focused on reconnecting people and land through Indigenous leadership.
The program will include time for reflection, audience Q&A, and viewing of cultural items such as baskets, plant materials, and weaving displays.
