Join us for a RARE opportunity to learn the sacred art of DRUM Making. BAT Academy is excited to host Oglala Lakota elder Jerome Kills Small as he passes on his knowledge of traditional hand drum crafting.
In this three hour course, you will craft your own 15-inch drum out of high quality materials including buffalo leather hide and raw hide lacing.
Jerome Kills Small is an Oglala Lakota from Porcupine, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Reservation. At University of South Dakota, he taught Lakota Language, American Indian Thought, Siouan Tribal Culture, Early Native American History. Jerome is a traditional storyteller and oral historian for public schools, museums, and colleges. He knows the origins and stories behind the flag song, patriotic songs of the Lakota, and ceremonial songs. He is an arena director, conducts ceremonies, and explains cultural protocol. He makes drums and drum sticks, and does feather work. Mr. Kills Small is on the board of Directors for the Native American Advocacy Program.
Seating is limited.
The full deposit of $225 is required to reserve your spot. Special certificates will be made for those that want to reserve a seat and give it as a gift for the holidays.
