“Traces of Stass” is a tribute to the iconic Cypriot artist and educator Stass Paraskos, born in Anaphotia, west of Larnaca. ‘Stass Paraskos is considered the most significant Cypriot artist of his generation’ (The Guardian, 2014).A performative walk will be led by the artists through Stass’ childhood surroundings and the landscapes that inspired his work. The artists will broadcast this walk from Anaphotia and project it in Larnaca City Centre, allowing the audience to follow it in real time.
This performance reconnects the past with the present, exploring layers of home and memory while enabling people to connect through Stass’ work. The proposing artists will trace Stass’ steps in Anaphotia and guide viewers on a journey through time and space. Viewers will explore the juxtapositions of Stass’ topography and the memories preserved on the canvases of his landscape paintings, strategically placed along the walking route. Each encounter will feature pre-recorded reflections from childhood friends, family, colleagues, and art professionals.
The walk concludes when Koutsoftides and Pruciak encounter a video installation featuring a short interview with Stass, played and broadcast to the audience in Larnaca. This gesture allows Stass, metaphorically and symbolically, to revisit his home village. Through this broadcast performance, the artists create an allegorical window connecting Stass’s memory, his paintings, and the village of Anaphotia.
The village of Anaphotia thus reminisces Stass, and Larnaca traces him, creating a live dialogue with the audience beyond time and space.
