While Edgar Allan Poe spent the majority of his life between Richmond, Virginia and Baltimore, Maryland, did you know that he spent his final years in what would later become The Bronx, New York? It was here where the settings for some of his last stories resembled the nearby Bronx landscape, from the tolling of the Fordham chapel bell in “The Bells” to the tragedy he suffered in “Ulalume” and “Annabel Lee." This is the story of Poe and his largely forgotten time in New York.
Join New York Adventure Club as we journey back to the 19th century and follow the footsteps of Edgar Allan Poe throughout his final days living in Fordham, New York, which today is a part of New York City's borough of the Bronx.
Led by historian Stephen Paul DeVillo, our digital showcase of Poe and his Bronx travels will include:
-An overview of Edgar Allan Poe's time living in New York , and the tragedies that impacted him
-A discussion around the inspirations for his poems written in the Bronx , some of which can still be seen (and heard) today
-A look inside his still-standing home known as The Poe Cottage
-A virtual walk along the same pathways that Poe used to walk himself, from the trails along the scenic Bronx River, to the Old Croton Aqueduct, to High Bridge
- Little-known Bronx surprises along the way
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Stephen — any and all questions about Edgar Allan Poe's time in the Bronx are welcomed and encouraged!
