Tracers is a 1980 play by Vietnam veterans that uses a collage of vignettes and soliloquies to depict the brutal, traumatic experiences of a group of "grunts" during the Vietnam War, from basic training through combat and the lasting psychological toll. Created through workshops at the Odyssey Theatre, the play is a raw, gritty, and often harrowing account of the battlefield's horrors, the emotional isolation of the soldiers, and their struggles to reintegrate into a society that often preferred to forget the war, ultimately serving as a plea for understanding and the long-term impact of war.
