Embark on unforgettable multi-day SUP adventures! Our Paddle Canada Touring SUP Skills certification is designed for experienced paddlers seeking to enhance their skills and explore beyond the limits of day trips. This comprehensive course will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to plan and execute safe and enjoyable multi-day paddling expeditions.
In this course we'll paddle to Granite Falls the morning of Friday May 23rd, learning and practicing new skills on the way. At the campsite you will be introduced to trip planning, navigation, touring communication, and remote camping. Of course, you will always eat well on our courses and tours. The class includes one evening meal and one lunch.
What You'll Learn:
This comprehensive course covers a wide range of advanced paddling skills and safety techniques, including:
- Navigation & Planning: Learn basic navigation techniques, including route planning using charts, and GPS devices. Learn to understand weather forecasts, tides, and current predictions to plan safe and successful trips. You will be introduced to factoring in wind, weather, and tides when planning routes.
- Safety & Risk Management: Develop safety plans, including risk assessment for various paddling environments, and emergency procedures (communication, signaling, and what to carry for basic first aid). Learn how to identify and mitigate potential hazards on multi-day trips.
- Camping & Wilderness Skills: Learn essential camping and wilderness survival skills relevant to coastal environments, including campsite selection (considering tides, wind, and water access), fire safety (including safe fire building practices), Leave No Trace principles, food storage and preparation, and bear safety.
- Paddling Techniques: Refine your paddling skills for extended distances and challenging conditions, including efficient forward stroke techniques (to minimize fatigue), paddling in wind and waves (including bracing and directional control), paddling with a loaded board, and efficient group paddling techniques.
- Equipment & Gear: Learn how to select and pack appropriate gear for multi-day trips, including clothing systems for varying weather conditions, food and water considerations, camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, stoves), and necessary safety and repair equipment. Understand the pros and cons of different types of touring SUPs and gear.
