About this Event

A London Art Salon morning of art firsts!

Take a contemporary art gallery tour through London's Mayfair district with the London Art Salon's contemporary art historian and curator Chantal Condron.

We kick off at Gazelli Art House on Dover Street to visit their new exhibition Harold Cohen: AARON Retrospective. A true innovator of the pre-digital age, British artist was a pioneer of AI technology from his first experiments with what he called ‘machine work’ in the early 1970s. Based on Cohen’s desire to explore the relationship and creative processes between the act of drawing and image-making, he developed AARON, what became known as an internationally recognised series of computer programmes that could create images autonomously. A long-time resident of the U.S, Cohen lived and worked in California from 1968 until his death in 2016, but this will be the first UK solo exhibition of his AARON-focused work.

We will then take a 6-7 min walk to Stephen Friedman Galleryld Burlington Street to visit the first solo exhibition of recent paintings by . Dream-like in their execution and stylistic approach, her portraits, interiors and landscapes are compelling and mysterious – described by novelist Deborah Levy as ‘paintings that reward a great deal of looking. If their surface is deceptively decorous – mellow colours and sculptural shapes – they are also uncanny, both familiar and strange.’

A short walk around the corner will take us to our final stop, Hauser & Wirth on Saville Row, ending on a joyously ebullient note to see the first European solo exhibition of new paintings by U.S. artist Widely acclaimed for her 2018 portrait of First Lady, Michelle Obama, Sherald’s portraits are celebratory contemporary representations of Black Americans. As a young girl growing up in Columbus, Georgia, she recalled a lack of representation of Black lives and experience in society – an impetus that has shaped her subsequent positive, if not sometimes critical, portraits of the African American experience of race and society.

We are limiting the numbers to 15 people so that our guests can feel comfortably distanced.
