About this Event
This research forum presents work in progress by Livia Lazzaro Rezende, Diana Baker Smith, and Verónica Tello, focussed on approaches to embodied histories and the activation of archives through performance, touch, and emotion. Embracing the idea of affect and feeling in their approach to historiography – this forum asks: What are the affective ways in which archives and histories move and touch us? What happens when they refuse to touch?
The forum will engage audiences with three short performance lectures/videos and a panel conversation.
Rezende will draw on recent research projects that reconsider colonial legacies in Brazil, design, and the archives—from the construction of Brasilia to the authoritarianism of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985). She will reflect on the development of touchy-feely methodologies and new models for working collectively with history and memory that foreground untold histories of migrant workers, women, and other “others”.
Baker Smith will present a performance lecture tracing her embodied approach to activating archives in her recent video works including, She Speaks in Sculpture (2022), and This Place Where They Dwell (2024).
Tello will present a performance lecture on a new monograph on the international exhibition history of Chilean contemporary art during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990). This project focuses on how certain exhibitions archived early forms of neoliberalism and its resistance within Chile and the then-emergent “global contemporary” art world. The project maps eccentricity, refusal, and the strike as counter-neoliberal strategies that gave way to an alternate, if not also shadowy, notion of being contemporary.
