FAQ for Classy Tote Bag Class
$25.00 kit fee (cash or check)
***THERE IS ONLY ONE SPOT LEFT IN THIS WORKSHOP. THE COLOR KIT LEFT IS GREEN/GOLD (CHOICE D). PLEASE SIGN IN USING THE LINK BELOW.***
Who: Beginners who have used a sewing machine. You do not need to have made a bag, put in a zipper, or used cork before. You do need to have sewn something. Advanced sewers will also enjoy the class.
Why: To offer a maker class. You will learn the basics of bag construction, using cork, putting in zipper, box corner, and pocket construction. This will set you up if you wish to make the same or other bags in future or just this one in class. You will receive instruction on techniques, and things to watch for in ordering supplies and future projects
What: This is a hands-on guided class where you walk out with a finished tote bag. You will know some of the things to watch for when ordering your own cork or supplies. It is a Sallie Tomato pattern. She is a local Fox Lake business. There is a video how to of most of their patterns. If possible to watch prior to class, there is a 22 minute video available on YouTube for Sallie Tomato Anna tutorial at

Kits are supplied by the library. Cork is durable, comes in many colors and is expensive.
The library is subsidizing this, so a kit fee is commonly required to cover some of the expenses. All the pieces will already be cut out. Multiple colorways will be available but limited by the amount of cork that has been ordered. The kit fee for this project is $25, payable by cash or check. The tote bag will be yours to take home at the end of the class.
Registration will include the choice of colorway you choose so we have bobbins filled and machine threaded with matching thread for the color you chose.
Sewing machines: The library has provided Brother XL2600I sewing machines that can be used at the library for the class. The Brothers are nice basic machines, and you will only need a straight stitch and reverse. There is a tutorial online for this model of Brother if you choose to view it.
. If you want to bring your own machine, feel free if you can carry it.
On the day of the class, the kits and pattern with all the pieces will be here at the library.
*Bring on day of class: Basic sewing supplies: scissors, seam ripper (just in case) small ruler and fabric marking pen, chalk or pencil, pins and clips if you have. Also if you bring your own machine come prepared with an empty bobbin, so you can fill the bobbin and thread machine. We will have extra of each. Please bring a zipper foot along if you have one.*
In preparation (if you want): There is a 22-minute video available on YouTube: Sallie tomato tutorial Anna at

Pat says: "I am an experienced adult educator, bag maker and quilter. I have used cork a lot. Initial test class had 5 people: 2 perfectionists, only 2 had ever made a bag before, one had never put in a zipper, 2 not since high school, none had used cork or foam before. All were very pleased with the results. I like to make bags to give as gifts and because I can make almost any bag in a day. Will have other bags in class to show to give ideas. If there is sufficient interest will have a waitlist and add another date for class."
Fill in all of the information below to register for the event. Indicate your preferences for color (see the photo above) and whether you need to use a library sewing machine or plan to bring your own. Color choices will be similar to photo above.
Attendance at the class is limited to six people. There are six kits in five colors, so you will be asked your color preference and next choices in order. Please list your order of preference for all five colors. Color choices will be similar to photo above.
You will receive a confirmation email at the address you provide below. If you don't receive the confirmation, your registration has not been accepted. For any questions, call the library at 920-623-5910 and ask for Pat or Catherine.
