About this Event
Join Farmer Ben to learn how to grow tomatoes successfully and how to meet the challenges along the way. Our goal is to help all participants successfully grow and harvest tomatoes and enjoy them on your plate. Beginners and experienced gardeners are welcome.
To start the workshop, farmer Ben will give a short tour of our un-certified organic farm and share our tomato growing setups. Then Ben will give an overview of the different types of tomatoes, determinate vs indeterminate, hybrid vs open pollinated, available disease resistant varieties and other considerations. Ben will also cover fertility needs, pest and disease management and different types of trellises. We will discuss challenges we expect to meet along the way, some basic practices to use and where to find more help when you need it.
We will get our hands dirty by transplanting a few tomato plants, setting up a few different types of trellis, tying the plants to the trellis and putting down irrigation and mulch. We will also cover how to harvest and store your fruits for maximum enjoyment.
Farm-grown herbal tea and water will be provided.
Folks will go home with transplants they start themselves, four pots of garden ready tomato starts ($24 value) and informational sheets related to timing, best practices and related resources.
