Now, as San Francisco Opera prepares to shake off the darkness of the past year, that opera once again lights the way: Giacomo Puccini’s towering classic "Tosca."
Descend into Rome on the brink of war, where a police state reigns through violence and threats. At its head is Baron Scarpia, whose lust for power has found its latest target: Tosca, a young singer whose heart belongs to another.
The sounds of Rome ring out as soprano Ailyn Pérez makes her staged role debut as Puccini’s fiery heroine, an artist ensnared by an unimaginable fate. Tenor Michael Fabiano stars as Tosca’s lover Mario Cavaradossi, a role he recently played to acclaim at Paris Opera. And in his role debut, bass-baritone Alfred Walker oozes villainy as Scarpia, a man whose cruelty knows no bounds.
Conductor Eun Sun Kim makes her inaugural appearance as music director in this masterpiece that once again marks a history making moment for San Francisco Opera. Shawna Lucey’s period production returns for its first revival since its 2018 debut.
