Shade
Based in nipaluna Hobart, Shade is a lively, experimental, groove-driven quartet, performing original instrumental music infused with neo soul, psychedelic, and nu-jazz influences. Their vibrant soundscapes evoke expansive imagery of alien terrains through sizzling sonic layers, offering audiences a playful and engaging experience to immerse themselves in.
Pillars of women and nonbinary folk in Hobart’s music scene, the band features some of the island's finest groove specialists, Sasha Gavlek (bass), Maggie Abraham (drums), Crystal Livermore (guitar), and Izabella Tunis-Notley (synth/keys). After making their debut at Bonzaki Festival (2023) they quickly garnered attention with their unique sound, vibrant energy, and representation of women and nonbinary folk in instrumental music. Shade has since performed at Dark Mofo (2023), Sasha's women/gender-fluid showcase at The Grand Poobah (2024), The Adelaide Street House Concert (2024), and twice a
t A Festival Called Panama (2023 – 2024). Behind the scenes they have spent the last several months working on fresh material, crafting luscious compositions that they are excited to release into the world.
Toqui
Toqui are a 8-piece semi acoustic orchestral jazz ensemble filled with darkly cinematic horn-and-cello-laden arrangements following pianist and composer Oscar France. Their music takes elements of folk, electronic and jazz music, with a focus on blending acoustic instruments together and instilling expansive scenes of the natural world bristling with life.
Like baroque minstrels, this suite of beautiful, bodacious and talented musicians dance up the score on a witched night where music and magic entwine.
Having released their debut album ‘Wire Owl’ in May this year, Toqui are on a journey to create, perform and record more of their magical music.
They have developed a solid following at their residencies at Bar 303’s Jass Hub in Northcote, the intimate Ragtime Tavern in Preston and other local venues. They performed recently at the Castlemaine Jazz Festival following their sold out album launch at the Jazz Lab.
