About this Event

Topography of Jazz Series: Revolutions in Sound Up, Down, and Across NYC

Journey through the rich history of jazz in New York City, exploring iconic neighborhoods, venues, and eras that shaped its evolution. From the Harlem Renaissance's swing-filled ballrooms and rent parties to the intellectual rebellion of bebop on 52nd Street, each week uncovers vibrant stories of musicians and the spaces they inhabited. Delve into Tin Pan Alley’s cultural legacy, the avant-garde secrets of the Upper West Side, and unconventional sites of jazz innovation. With narration and live performances by Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman and special guests, this series offers a dynamic blend of music, storytelling, and history to celebrate jazz's enduring legacy.

Part 2 - The Birth of Bebop and The Rooms Where It Happened — Bedrooms, Speakeasies, and The Iconic 52nd st. Jazz Clubs

A new era of jazz (1940s-60s) marked by highly intellectual melodic and improvisatory structures blows the scene wide open, exposing a New York City that is deeply fragmented along racial, socioeconomic, geographical, generational, and musical fronts. This week covers the sounds, the artists, their homes, and the venues that would forever alter the course of music on the planet. Listeners can expect a deep dive into the stories and music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, and more. Narration and piano performance by Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman with guest Trumpeter Anthony Hervey.
