About this Event

Topography of Jazz Series: Revolutions in Sound Up, Down, and Across NYC

Journey through the rich history of jazz in New York City, exploring iconic neighborhoods, venues, and eras that shaped its evolution. From the Harlem Renaissance's swing-filled ballrooms and rent parties to the intellectual rebellion of bebop on 52nd Street, each week uncovers vibrant stories of musicians and the spaces they inhabited. Delve into Tin Pan Alley’s cultural legacy, the avant-garde secrets of the Upper West Side, and unconventional sites of jazz innovation. With narration and live performances by Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman and special guests, this series offers a dynamic blend of music, storytelling, and history to celebrate jazz's enduring legacy.

Part 1 - The Harlem Renaissance from the Biggest Ballrooms to the Smallest Air Shafts:

An exploration of Harlem and Sugar Hill from the early 1920s-40s, this week examines historic music venues, ballrooms, rent parties, and actual apartments (and their airshafts) that lay the groundwork for a renaissance of swing music and dance. Listeners can expect a performance of various styles of music (Harlem Stride, swing, ballads, latin…etc) by the great Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Chick Webb, Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie (The Lion) Smith, and more, interspersed with historical interludes. Narration and piano performance by Gabriel Schillinger-Hyman with guest Saxophonist Erena Terakubo
