About this Event

Topaz Art Pilgrimage

Join us for an art pilgrimage in Salt Lake City and Delta, UT, May 2-4, 2024! Despite their unjust imprisonment and harsh conditions, incarcerees at Topaz found ways to let their creative talents and expressions flourish. Through watercolors, oil paintings, jewelry, dance, photography, ikebana, music, and more, the Topaz incarcerees left behind a legacy of art that continues to inspire and influence subsequent generations. This in-person event will provide opportunities to view the art, experience the music, hear the stories, and learn the history behind the creativity and strength of Topaz artists.

The pilgrimage will be held in conjunction with the groundbreaking exhibition, Pictures of Belonging: Miki Hayakawa, Hisako Hibi, and Miné Okubo, curated by Dr. ShiPu Wang, Professor of Art History at the University of California, Merced. This exhibit, organized by the Japanese American National Museum, premiers February 24, 2024 at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, and travels to four additional venues, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Learn more about the exhibit here: Pictures of Belonging. (Please note that registration does not include entrance fees or transportation to UMFA. Tickets can be purchased at the museum. Pilgrimage attendees will receive a discount.)

There will be two days of activities in Salt Lake City and a full day of activity on Saturday at the Topaz site and Museum in Delta. See the agenda for details about each of these three days. Buy your tickets today so you don't miss out on this exciting event! We look forward to connecting, sharing, learning, and being inspired with you!

Registration closes on April 15, 2024 or when we reach capacity! Register now so you don't miss out!
