This not-to-be-missed program features Gary Rieschel, founder and managing partner of Qiming Venture Partners, a premier China-based VC fund investing early in technology and healthcare. Launched in China in 2006, Qiming has supersized to $9.5 billion in capital under management, and nine US dollar funds and 8 RMB funds.
One of the most tuned-in and masterful investors in China–US venture, Rieschel brings 35-plus years of experience in Silicon Valley, Japan, and China at SoftBank, Cisco, and three early China VC firms he helped to form including Softbank China Ventures and Ceyuan Ventures.
A Harvard MBA, Gary is outspoken and transparent in influential circles about ongoing US–China tensions. Unlike other Valley VCs who parachuted in to do deals, Gary lived in Shanghai for 11 years. He made a well-timed relocation to Seattle in 2016 and still travels to China at least twice a year. He also oversees the firm’s US healthcare investments through am affiliate fund.
Gary chairs Asia Society Northern California and Seattle, and serves on the Atlantic Council’s board of directors. Years ago, Rieschel told me he would know when it was time to take “his victory lap.” Qiming’s successful trajectory suggests he has earned it.
