Create a tooled leather work of art in this 2 part class! In part 1, we will be tooling a mountain lion on a 6 x 6 inch piece of undyed vegetable-tanned leather. We’ll be learning the techniques with specialized figure carving tools to give the image a three dimensional aspect. Special attention will be paid to detailing facial features of the cat, including eyes, nose, ears and fur patterns. When finished, we’ll seal the leather with a special finish, and allow it to dry overnight. Part 2 of the class will focus on coloring the image with acrylic paints to bring out the lifelike essence of this majestic cat.
Part 2 is optional-some students may prefer to leave their carving the natural color of the leather. Those who want to continue will learn several painting techniques, including under-painting with washes, and dry brushing to highlight fur patterns. We’ll also learn how to make the eyes sparkle and reflect with metallic paints and gloss varnish.
Natural wooden display frames for finished pieces will be available to students for an additional $15.00.
All supplies provided.
