Tony Birtill Annual Lecture
21st October at 6 pm
at the Liverpool Irish Centre
"Frongoch: University of Revolution” by Gwyn Sion Ifan
Conradh na Gaeilge, Liverpool, in partnership with the Liverpool Irish Festival, is delighted to present the third annual Tony Birtill Lecture, commencing at 6 pm on 21st October 2024 at the Liverpool Irish Centre.
On 21st October 2021, Liverpool (and Ireland) lost a great Irish language supporter, Tony Birtill. He made an invaluable contribution to the conservation, promotion, and teaching of the Irish language on Merseyside for over 30 years. A **Gaeilgeoir** (fluent Irish speaker) and walking enthusiast who loved the outdoors, Tony was also a keen historian and language activist. His widely acclaimed book, *Liverpool: A Hidden History*, offers an incisive insight into the lives and living conditions of Irish emigrants in Liverpool in the aftermath of the Great Famine in Ireland (1845-1852).
This year’s memorial lecture is entitled *“Frongoch: University of Revolution”*. It tells the story of the Frongoch marker stone and plaque erected by Tony, Gwyn Ifan, and friends in memory of the 1,800 Irishmen interned there following the 1916 Rising in Dublin. The talk will fittingly be delivered by Gwyn Siôn Ifan, himself a Welsh language activist from the Welsh Language Society and Tony’s close friend of over 30 years.
Join us to hear Gwyn deliver what promises to be a very interesting talk.
