About this Event

* This is a co-sponsored event *

The UNM Department of Spanish & Portuguese' Resolanas Program and the Department of Music' Music from the Americas Concert Series present Hispanic singer, musician, and scholar Tomás Lozano at UNM's Keller Hall.

Lozano will showcase his vast knowledge and skillful interpretation of "romances," a type of short literary composition, epic-lyrical in nature, which narrate a story by singing or reciting it. They emerged from oral storytelling and became popular in the 15th century, forming collections called romanceros.

Wherever Spanish or Castilian was spoken, romances were sung, from Tierra del Fuego in South America to southern Colorado in the U.S., forming a predominant part of traditional Hispanic culture. Until recently, New Mexico was a haven where Hispanic culture maintained its purest traditions and where Spanish romances were perfectly preserved.

For this recital, Lozano has chosen a dozen different romances from the extensive corpus of the Romancero, featuring shepherds, wolves, ladies, knights, sailors, lovers, and beggars, and in which even death itself will appear. The ballads of the lady and the shepherd, the unfaithful wife, or Gerineldo, among others, are examples of some ballads that were once sung in New Mexico as echoes of times past.

This event is made possible by the Mellon Foundation's "New Mexico Humanities Now!" program and the support from the following UNM entities: The Department of Music, Department of Spanish & Portuguese, Resonalas, Department of Chicana & Chicano Studies, Latin American & Iberian Institute, and the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology.
