This is a book about desire and its complicatedness, in it “Angel challenges our assumptions about women’s desire. Why, she asks, should they be expected to know their desires? And how do we take sexual violence seriously, when not knowing what we want is key to both eroticism and personhood?”. Base understandings of consent, even those hinged to consent needing to be affirmative are shown as not yet enough. Via a rethinking of consent, desire, arousal and vulnerability we are promised, “a new language to talk about sexuality” and good sex (versobooks.com).
At 160 pages this is a fairly short book, although some reviews have described the writing as prohibitively ‘academic’. We’re interested to hear what you think, hopefully it is an exciting read.
We will meet on Sunday 17th November, upstairs in NieuwLand, at 16:30.
There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which exist as alternatives to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods.
To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website (https://nieuwland.cc).
For this meeting we will be upstairs which unfortunately is not wheelchair accessible.
If you have access needs regarding the event, that you feel may not be in place, please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these.
