Tom is a long time friend of the community. He and his wife, Karen cultivate a farm in Adams County Ohio.
It has been a joy to write and record the songs on this album while tending to the rhythms of life on our hundred-acre woodland farm in the Brush Creek valley of southern Ohio, a place that still holds something of the wildness and musicality that the Shawnee people—who inhabited this land long before us—surely apprehended and honored. These songs reflect my own spirit-journey of seeking to discover the God of Love in hidden and forgotten places, among seekers and sufferers. This collection also explores my own experience of love, loss, relinquishment, and rebirth.
I have prayed, shaped, and sung these songs over many spacious days and nights in the valley. The melodies have been inspired by a host of creatures who help create a symphony for each season—the crow’s caw amidst winter’s deep quiet, the chorus of spring peepers on warm February nights when windows are left open and the fire left to die, the whisper of the blue heron as she vaults gracefully over the hillside in April, the percussive crescendo of locusts and katydids on hot summer evenings as we pass through the hayfields on our way back from the spring-fed creek, and the rhythmic chirping of the lone cricket when the geese return from the north, Orion rises above the eastern ridge in early morning ,and the maple leaves begin to fall.
While these songs are rooted in this particular place, they have also grown out of a deep concern for the broader world and a persistent hope in the ferment of love. They have been inspired by the life of Jesus of Nazareth, who recognized each person he encountered as a beautiful creation, a God-breathed wonder, and who beckoned his followers to apprehend that we belong to each other and to a cacophonous song of many voices. If we behold the world through such eyes, perhaps we will all see God burning brightly in the vast cast of characters around us—and perhaps the world will bend toward the light of love just as alpine wildflowers turn to kiss the warmth of the sun.
