About this Event
The 2025 Tom White Memorial Lecture is sponsored by Humanists West (Galway), Westport Humanists and North West Humanists (Sligo) communities - Tom having been an active participant in all three groups.
‘Links in the Chain’ is the humanistically-inspired title ascribed to the lecture by its presenter Owen Morton. In a wide-reaching dissertation he aligns core values of this late, warm-hearted Knock, Co. Mayo resident of Ulster Presbyterian lineage with those of an under-the-radar 18th. Century Co. Down-born philosopher of the same pedigree. This anchor man’s name is Francis Hutcheson (‘The most influential Irishman you’ve probably never heard of’ – Frank McNally, Irish Times Diarist.) Other likeminded but lesser-known souls are interwoven into the narrative. It’s thus hoped that a 30 minute tribute to a Man for All Seasons, a historic odyssey of sorts, but with a core message/aspiration befitting the main character, will have something for everyone.
Please note: Refreshments on arrival at 130pm. Event commences at 2pm with contributions from Ruth Healy and Ger Reidy. Lively discussion will follow the formal lecture.
