About this Event

Starting in 1974, Edward Gorey sent a total of fifty letters to his close friend Tom Fitzharris, illustrating each envelope with his unique style of whimsy, humor, and ink and watercolor work. Fitzharris will be discussing Gorey’s envelope art, letters, design, and more. Joining Tom in conversation is Robert Greskovic, a renowned dance critic and friend of Gorey for over thirty years. When Tom Fitzharris met Edward "Ted" Gorey in 1974, the two quickly struck up a friendship. Over the next year Gorey sent a total of fifty letters to Fitzharris. Every envelope Fitzharris received was illustrated by Gorey, and filled with surprises: typewritten letters with news and opinions from Gorey's life, handwritten note cards with unexpected quotes, sketches, inside jokes, and a host of other joyous miscellany.
Assembled here for the first time, these envelopes and their contents deliver all the humor, imagination, gossip, and wonder that came with being Edward Gorey's pen pal.
Tom Fitzharris was a close friend of Edward Gorey in the 1970s. He currently lives in New York City and East Hampton and gives tours at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Robert Greskovic has been writing about dance since 1973. Since 1998, he has reviewed dance for The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of Ballet 101: The Complete Guide To Learning and Loving the Ballet (Hyperion). He served as consulting editor for Baryshnikov: In Black and White (Bloomsbury), and as consultant for Ballet (Kingfisher). He has taught dance history and aesthetics at Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, City College of New York, and Hunter College. His dance reviews and feature stories have appeared in the Village Voice, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times and other newspapers and magazines. He met Edward Gorey in 1970 and remained friends with him for the next three decades. He contributed the essay “The Man Who Wanted to Be Entertained” for the catalog accompanying the 2018 “Gorey’s Worlds” exhibition at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. He holds a BFA and MFA from Pratt Institute.
