Like stumbling upon Leonard Cohen in a café on K Road, the magic of fleeting moments are illuminated in simple folk songs. Tom will perform tunes from his forthcoming new album recorded live to tape at Roundhead Studios and mastered at Abbey Road alongside renowned Producer and multi-instrumentalist Dave Khan (Reb Fountain, Marlon Williams, The Veils) and the inimitable Cass Basil (Tiny Ruins, Carnivorous Plant Society, Bic Runga). With songs that revel in the joy of the unobserved, this folk trio mix flatpicked, left-field poetry with gut-wrenching ballads that stand on the shoulders of Dylan, Mitchell, Lenker & Drake. They are songs meant for attentive ears, stories that come alive in the hands of a curious audience.
Tom Cunliffe writes folk songs like short films; vivid, offbeat, and full of heart. Based in Aotearoa, New Zealand, he crafts lyrical worlds, with a guitar tuned sideways and a voice that balances gravity with joy. “An artist hitting his stride,” (Graham Reid), Cunliffe has released three critically acclaimed albums over the past decade and played to sold out crowds around the country. Having toured New Zealand and Europe, Cunliffe’s live shows are known to be “utterly compelling” (13th Floor), full of "songs packed with meaning and intent, communications expressed with admirable clarity and literacy.” (Libel Music) Cunliffe has supported a number of internationally renowned artists including M. Ward, Grace Cummings, and Reb Fountain, bringing his mix of warmth, wit, and slow-burning intensity to stages near and far.
