The theme of this year’s Toi Tangata Hui ā-Tau is “Te Ahi Kaiata” – The flame that consumes the morning. This kaupapa symbolises our deep connection to ahi as a source of warmth, sustenance, and ancestral presence. It leads us towards new possibilities, embodying a futuristic vision of hauora Māori and resilience.

Keynote Snapshot
- Te Kahu Rolleston is a National Poetry Slam champion and former participant in The Banff Centre’s Indigenous Writing Programme. Te Kahu Rolleston weaves together the energy of kapa haka and the sharpness of battle rap to create poetry that challenges, inspires, and connects.
- Peter Cowan is a world-class Para va’a athlete. Peter has won two golds and a silver at the world waka ama champs, and in 2024, won silver at the ICF Paracanoe World Champs and bronze in the Men’s 200m VL3 at the Paris Paralympics Games.
- Hinerapa Rupuha is a raukura of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Hoani Waititi Marae, and a a trainee navigator under the guidance of PWO Navigator Jack Thatcher, a leading figure in the revival of Waka. She is currently preparing for a navigation test voyage from Aotearoa to Samoa which involves using ancestral navigation techniques, such as reading the stars, ocean swells, winds, and natural signs, to chart a course across the Pacific without modern instruments.
- Professor Ngātai Taepa is a leading contemporary Māori artist whose work revitalises indigenous narratives through kōwhaiwhai and contemporary expression. Beyond his contributions to the art world, Ngatai has been instrumental in supporting the revitalisation of Puanga within the Waiwhetū community, ensuring that the ahi throughout the year – each marking a time of renewal and wellbeing – are upheld and strengthened.
