We are delighted to invite you to our very first Together for Teens Community Event – a night of inspiration, connection, and practical support for parents, carers, and young people.
This event also marks the public launch of Together for Teens, a new community initiative dedicated to supporting parents and carers in promoting teen mental health and wellbeing.
🎀 Guest Speaker – Mike Scotland
Mike Scotland is a passionate mental health campaigner who shares his lived experience with honesty, humour, and heart. Having spoken at schools, community events, and national conferences, Mike uses his personal journey to break down stigma, spark conversations, and encourage people of all ages to seek help when needed.
When Mike visited Alford Academy earlier this year, his talk had a profound impact on pupils across year groups β€” opening up dialogue around mental health and inspiring young people to speak more openly. His return on 19th November promises to be just as powerful, offering parents and carers the same opportunity to engage with his story and message.
🧠 Workshop Facilitator – Laura Simmons
Laura Simmons is a highly experienced counsellor, counselling supervisor, and trainer with 26 years in the mental health sector. Her career has focused on supporting adults facing complex mental health challenges and advocating for mental health awareness in the community.
Laura began her journey as a volunteer counsellor with Mental Health Aberdeen in 2008 before earning her MSc in Counselling Children, Young People and Adults from the University of Aberdeen. She later became the Counselling Services Manager and Lead Trainer at MHA until its closure in 2025.
Today, Laura runs a thriving private practice offering counselling to clients aged 12 and above, while also delivering mental health awareness training to both corporate and third-sector organisations. In her workshop following Mike’s talk, Laura will share practical tools and strategies to help parents and carers better support young people’s mental health.
Outside of work, Laura enjoys reading, weightlifting, family time, and walking her tiny dog through the beautiful landscapes of Deeside.
