After hearing the pioneering countertenor Alfred Deller in the 1950s Benjamin Britten, England’s leading composer of the mid 20th century, had the inspiration to write for him the role of Oberon, king of the fairies and thereby add a new voice-type to the operatic genre.In this entertaining and informative Opera Salon Tobias Cole presents the story of the countertenor voice in opera since Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream was premiered in 1960.
