About this Event

Tobi Ogundiran is the award-winning author of the Guardian of the Gods duology (, ) and the critically acclaimed short fiction collection, , which was a Publishers Weekly Top Ten Summer Read. He is the recipient of the Ignyte and British Fantasy Awards. He has been a finalist for the Locus, World Fantasy, British Science Fiction Association, Shirley Jackson, and Nommo awards. His short fiction has been featured in original anthologies such as Africa Risen, The Book of Witches, Lore & Disorder; in several educational and Year’s Best anthologies; and twice on the hit podcast LeVar Burton Reads. Born and raised in Nigeria, he now lives and works in the US.

From Shirley Jackson award-nominated author Tobi Ogundiran, comes a highly anticipated debut collection of stories full of magic and wonder and breathtaking imagination!

In "The Lady of the Yellow-Painted Library" — featured in Levar Burton Reads — a hapless salesman flees the otherworldly librarian hell-bent on retrieving her lost library book.

"The Tale of Jaja and Canti" sees Ogundiran riffing off of Pinocchio. But this wooden boy doesn't seek to become real. Wanting to be loved, he journeys the world in search of his mother-an ancient and powerful entity who is best not sought out.

"The Goatkeeper's Harvest" contains echoes of Lovecraft, where a young mother living on a farm finds that goats have broken into her barn and are devouring all her tubers. As she chases them off with a rake, a woman appears claiming the goats are her children, and that the young woman has killed one of them and must pay the price: a goat for a goat.

These and other tales of the dark and fantastic await!

"Electrifying, terrifying, and tender."―Mark Oshiro, #1 New York Times bestselling author.

A cosmic war reignites and the fate of the orisha lie in the hands of an untried acolyte in this first entry of a new epic fantasy novella duology by Tobi Ogundiran, for fans of N. K. Jemisin and Suyi Davies Okungbowa.
Ashâke is an acolyte in the temple of Ifa, yearning for the day she is made a priest and sent out into the world to serve the orisha. But of all the acolytes, she is the only one the orisha refuse to speak to. For years she has watched from the sidelines as peer after peer passes her by and ascends to full priesthood.
Desperate, Ashâke attempts to summon and trap an orisha―any orisha. Instead, she experiences a vision so terrible it draws the attention of a powerful enemy sect and thrusts Ashâke into the center of a centuries-old war that will shatter the very foundations of her world.

The fate of the Orisha will be decided in the concluding volume of the Guardians of the Gods duology by award-winning author Tobi Ogundiran.

For four hundred years, the world's remaining Orisha have fought to survive the rapaciousness of the soul-stealing Godkillers and the charismatic words of the singular, mysterious figure who leads them, known as the Teacher. Now they seek to K*ll the one person whose existence defies their very mandate.

Ashâke carries within herself the spirits of the surviving Orisha, and she is on the hunt for allies who can help her defeat the encroaching army of Godkillers. But their influence is everywhere, and no one is immune--not even Ashâke. If she is to succeed, Ashâke will need to answer the question the Godkillers pose--are the Orisha even worth saving?
